Jim Furyk withdraws from Tour Championship with lingering wrist injury
Jim Furyk has withdrawn from this week's Tour Championship in Atlanta, citing a wrist injury that forced him to withdraw from last week's BMW Championship after just six holes.
The 2010 FedEx Cup champion sustained the left wrist contusion during the Deutsche Bank Championship, the second leg of four FedEx Cup playoff events, and the pain continued in the third leg last week in Chicago. It was the first time Furyk had withdrawn from a tournament in 20 years. Now, he's pulled out of two tournaments in as many week.
Furyk is putting his energy, instead, into preparing for the Presidents Cup, to be played Oct. 8-11 in South Korea.
“While I am disappointed to miss this week’s event in Atlanta, I am now placing all my efforts on being healthy and ready to play in the Presidents Cup,” Furyk said in a statement. “[American captain] Jay Haas will be made aware of my progress in the coming days, as we see how the injury responds to the treatment.”
If Furyk remains injured heading into the biennial matches between the U.S. and the International team, Haas has the option to pick any American player he wishes to replace Furyk. Haas has until Oct. 7 to make that choice, if needed.
As for the Tour Championship, Furyk will earn last-place earnings ($132,000) from the 30-player event and collect a bonus based on where he finishes in the FedEx Cup after the playoff finale sets the final standings.
